Trade Fair Hall 3, Frankfurt

Assignment
Trade fair halls are subject to a high thermal load because of the illumination and the high density of people. Therefore, they require particularly efficient ventilation and cooling systems. Traditional air-only A/C systems used so far in trade fair buildings require a lot of room for installation of the ventilation centers, air ducts and diffusers.

In case of the Trade Fair Hall 3, designed by the renowned architect Nicolas Grimshaw, the known very high requirements were even increased, demanding the discharge of cooling loads of up to 200 W/m_. The architect’s design resulted in an optimization of the useful and sales surfaces, avoiding huge center units. Kuehn Bauer Partner -kbp- were, therefore, looking for a new A/C systems design.

Solution
For the first time ever, we have designed and realized an air-water system for increased room heights based on the induction principle. With an adequate fresh air supply, two thirds of the thermal loads are removed through a decentralized water system. The induction units are suspended alongside technical bridges inside the hall at a height of 12 to 15 m. Due to a continuous adjustment of the diffusers integrated in the units, the penetration depth of the supply air jets may be perfectly adjusted to meet the corresponding room load requirements.

The design and system was created on behalf of and in close cooperation with the expert planners of Kuehn Bauer Partner from Munich. The system was pilot tested and optimized in the LTG labs based on the following criteria: minimum noise, high caloric output and excellent indoor air flow. (Construction planning: HL-Technik, Frankfurt, GU: HOCHTIEF AG).

Advantage
Induction units for ventilating and air conditioning large halls offer a better cost-effectiveness and flexibility than air-only systems when it comes to high cooling loads.
